The Shrewsbury Furniture Scheme

The Shrewsbury Furniture Scheme is a registered charity that receives donated household goods, stores & refurbishes them, as necessary, before selling them to those in need around Shropshire at an affordable cost. The main purpose of the volunteering opportunity is to assist drivers with the warehouse deliveries and collections of a variety of furniture and household goods. 

Main tasks include: 

  • Assist drivers with warehouse deliveries and collections of variety of furniture and household goods 
  • Receiving, moving and checking all goods inwards 
  • Dispatching all goods outwards 
  • Keeping the warehouse clean and tidy 

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Understand the importance of the charity's Health & Safety procedures
  • Understand the importance of confidentiality and safeguarding of vulnerable adults and/or children
  • Be aware of the standards set by the Shrewsbury Furniture Scheme and the need to work to these standards at all times 

Additional Information 

  • Volunteers are covered by the Shrewsbury Furniture Scheme's public liability and personal accident insurance while working / volunteering with us 
  • Volunteers must be aged 18+. There is no upper age limit 

About The Shrewsbury Furniture Scheme

The Shrewsbury Furniture Scheme is an independent furniture charity set up in Shropshire and was established in 1994.
We receive donated household goods, stores & refurbishes them, as necessary, before selling them on to those in need around Shropshire at affordable costs.
We work with multiple organisations to provide furniture for people in many different situations, such as being on benefits or being recently housed.

What skills do I need?

  • A certain degree of physical fitness is needed 
  • To be a team player, as the drivers assistant will work as part of the wider team 
  • To be punctual and reliable to arrive on time to help at the agreed days and times 

We also offer training, which includes:

  • Every volunteer will receive our mandatory training on manual handling 
  • Every volunteer will have access and be signposted towards training which the group feels is appropriate for the role 
  • Every volunteer will be trained in all the tasks they are required to carry out, to ensure they have the skills and confidence to fulfill their role
  • No volunteer will be expected to carry out their duties unsupervised until they are confident and skilled in their duties
  • All volunteers will be supported by the Warehouse & Transport Manager, and their skills and contribution to the group will be reviewed on a regular basis

The Shrewsbury Furniture Scheme is open from 9:30am to 4:30pm, and we offering volunteering opportunities between those days and times. We adopt a flexible approach to meet volunteers' availability wherever possible. A set of 7 hours per week would be ideal, however more or less hours per week will of course be considered.
