Oswestry Community Action (Qube)
Are you a sociable person who can put people at ease in an unfamiliar situation? Qube is looking for confident and friendly people to volunteer as hosts at our new Men’s Brunch Clubs in Oswestry, Ellesmere and Wem.
This will be a new project and we are looking to set up a regular meeting in the Oswestry area. The aim of this is to relieve loneliness and isolation for men within our local community and offer a hot meal in a welcoming location. Men are statistically more likely to be affected by social isolation and as a result, are less likely to seek help. At these breakfast groups, men will be offered a subsidised breakfast/ brunch and will be encouraged to chat to others in the group and make new connections. The hosts will get to know the group members’ interests in order to facilitate and encourage social interaction and ensure no one feels left out or uncomfortable. Hosts will also be offered a complementary meal and will eat with the group if they would like to.
Key responsibilities
· To engage in conversation and encourage inclusion and participation in the group;
· To help lead any group activities and suggest activities which may reflect the groups interests;
· To report on the progress of the group to Qube and flag up any potential issues;
· To report any safeguarding issues to the Qube team.
Oswestry Community Action, (Qube) is a registered charity and multi-service provider of community facing wellbeing services. Our mission is to support and enhance the wellbeing and quality of life of communities in Shropshire and the bordering Welsh counties. We support people through the provision of community transport, social groups and befriending, volunteer brokering, community health awareness support and arts and culture. Our service offering has developed over time and continues to evolve in response to local need; such as rural poverty and lack of opportunities; particularly for social isolation, education and poor public transport provision.
A Breakfast Club Host would:
· be able to communicate clearly with group members, staff and other volunteers;
· be confident to lone-work and to lead a group;
· be empathetic and non-judgmental towards members;
· understand the types of problems or challenges our members may face including isolation, loneliness, vulnerability or disabilities;
· be aware of boundaries relating to their volunteering role.
